Customer Retention Calculator

Enter customers at the start and end of a period, plus customers acquired during it, to separate retention from growth.

Your inputs

Try the example values, then enter your own. This tool runs in your browser.

Your result

Use the example or enter your figures, then calculate.

Use the same period for all counts. This assumes a customer is counted once and does not distinguish reactivations.

How it works

Retained customers = end customers − new customers. Retention = retained ÷ starting customers. Churn = 1 − retention.

Common questions

Why subtract new customers?

New customers were not in the starting group, so they should not inflate retention of that group.

Can retention exceed 100%?

Not for a simple customer count. If it does, check definitions or reactivations.
